First-Time Free Consultation? What to Bring, Ask, and Expect
By K&S Salon | October 20, 2026
Quick reality check: a free consultation is a short, no-cost chat where I look at your hair in real life, listen to what you want, check condition and past color, then give you a clear plan with timing and pricing. You’ll usually be in and out fast.
One of my favorite things a long-time client has said about working with me is that they don’t even bring photos anymore because I can assess what actually flatters you. If you’re nervous about a first visit, that’s normal. Hair is personal, and New York schedules are tight.
Here’s what I’ll make simple for you in a free consultation at K&S Salon in the West Village and Meatpacking District: what to bring so I can give you accurate pricing, the exact questions to ask so there are no surprises, and what the 10 minute consult looks like minute-by-minute. If you’ve been searching for hair styling near me, hair salon near me, or even a last-minute hair cut near me, this is the low-pressure way to get a plan before you commit.
Your salon consultation checklist, so I can quote you accurately
The fastest consults happen when I can see your starting point and your hair history. You don’t need a binder. A few details on your phone is plenty.
Bring these 5 things
- Inspiration photos (2 to 4 is enough). If you don’t have any, that’s fine too. I’ll ask questions and guide you.
- Recent color history: highlights, base color, gloss, box dye, henna, keratin, relaxer, or anything like that. Approximate dates help.
- Your at-home routine: what shampoo/conditioner you use, heat tools, and how often you wash. This affects both tone and longevity.
- Allergy/medication notes that might matter for color sensitivities. If you’re unsure, tell me and I’ll keep the plan conservative.
- Your real schedule: upcoming events, travel, and how often you’re willing to come in. I’d rather build a plan you’ll actually maintain.
Small NYC tip: If you’re coming from the subway or PATH, throw your hair up and don’t stress about styling it perfectly. I’m looking at color bands, density, and condition, not how good your blowout looks.
What to expect in a 10 minute free consultation at K&S
I keep this simple and direct. You’ll get candid advice, a plan you can accept or decline, and clear next steps. No hard sell. The point is clarity.
Step 1: A quick look at your hair in real light
I’ll check your ends, your mids, and your roots. I’m looking for things that change the plan, like previous lightening, dryness, uneven tone, or breakage risk. People come in asking for what’s trending. A client once told me they asked for balayage because it was trending, and I was honest that it didn’t make sense for them, then chose a different approach that came out better. That’s the consult in a nutshell.
Step 2: Your goal, translated into a real service plan
I’ll ask what you want to change, then I’ll narrow it down to a realistic option. If you want bright, natural-looking blonde highlights, I’ll talk about how we keep them popping without looking stripey. If you’re nervous about highlighting very dark hair, I’ll tell you what’s possible in one visit and what takes more time.
Step 3: Pricing and timing, so you can plan your life
I’ll give you a straightforward quote range based on your starting point and your goal. If your goal takes multiple visits, I’ll say that clearly. If a quick refresh makes more sense, I’ll say that too.

5 questions to ask me so there are zero surprises later
If you’ve had a bad experience elsewhere, it’s usually because the plan was vague. These questions keep it clear.
- What’s the total cost for the goal I’m describing? If it’s a range, I’ll explain what moves it up or down.
- How many visits will it take? I’ll be honest if your goal needs two steps.
- What’s maintenance like? Think retouches, toners, glosses, and how often you’ll want a trim.
- How long will the appointment take? Highlights can be hours. If you’re fitting things around work, I’ll help you plan.
- What do I need to do at home? This is where product and heat habits matter. People regularly tell us they notice a huge difference in hair texture when they travel without the shampoo/conditioner they love at home, so I take home care seriously.
If you’re timing this around transit: I can keep a consultation tight, which is why commuters coming into Manhattan from Hoboken, Jersey City, Brooklyn, Queens, and Weehawken often use this as the first step before they commit to a bigger color day.
After your free consultation: the plan, the next step, and what I might recommend
After we talk, you’ll leave with a clear next step. Sometimes that’s booking the full service right away. Sometimes it’s spacing things out, especially if you’re correcting old color or growing out damage. And occasionally I’ll suggest a quick follow-up consult if you want to sit with the options before you decide.
If your goal is a big change, I’ll also talk about what protects your hair health long-term. That focus matters. People come back to K&S for years because the plan isn’t just about today’s photo, it’s about keeping your hair looking good between visits.

West Village consult timing tips, plus one thing most salons won’t tell you
If you’re trying to fit self-care into a New York day, this is exactly what the consult is for. I can usually do it fast enough that it works before a subway ride, after the PATH, or as a quick stop if you’re walking back from the High Line, Chelsea Market, or nearby galleries.
The insider tip: tips are cash only. If you’re coming in for a longer cut or color appointment later, toss a little cash in your wallet so you’re not hunting for an ATM after.
If you want a free consultation with me at K&S Salon, come in with your hair history and your real schedule. I’ll tell you what’s realistic, what I’d do instead if a trend doesn’t suit you, and what it’ll cost. You’ll leave with a plan you can actually act on.
